Overview 

 

The School of Architecture, Planning & Design (SAP + D) seeks to be a center of innovation in Architecture, Planning and Design through education and research that meet the needs of Africa and Morocco. The School aims to contribute to sustainable architectural and urban development at the African and national levels by exploring geographical, social, cultural and environmental contexts.

Vision

 

  • Promote African knowledge and know-how in architecture and urban / territorial planning, by means of research and education through developing innovative human-centered solutions to forge resilient and sustainable African cities and territories.

Mission

 

  • Train architects as key players in the structural transformation of resilient African territories.
  • Capitalize knowledge through research and innovation to boost the content of education in architecture, urban planning and design.
  • Advance transdisciplinarity in the field of architecture to link creativity with smart and sustainable technological solutions.    
  • Launch relevant training curriculum aimed at developing skills while fostering entrepreneurship and advanced leadership.  
  • Orient training towards professional practice (learning by doing) through the Living Labs of UM6P and OCP as well as other tangible projects.
  • Forge future architects in the African business context through master’s programs that respond to the challenges of the rapidly changing Moroccan and African markets.


BIOGRAPHY OF THE PRINCIPAL PERMANENT / AFFILIATE PROFESSORS

Prof. John E. Fernandez associate professor SAP+D

John E. Fernandez is an associate professor at SAP+D. He is a full Professor and Director of the Building Technology Program at MIT’s Department of Architecture and is Director of the Urban Metabolism Group, a highly multidisciplinary research group focused on the resource intensity of cities and design and technology pathways for future urbanization. He is also co-Director of the International Design Center at MIT, a large internationally funded center for design studies across engineering and architecture.

Dr. JEROME CHENAL affiliate  Professeur SAP+D

Jérôme Chenal is a planner, a specialist in urban planning and African cities. He is currently the Secretary General of the CEAT at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne EPFL and an expert in many development projects in Africa.

Prof. JOHN MOTLOCH affiliate  Professeur SAP+D

John Motloch is a Professor of Landscape Architecture at Ball State University. His areas of teaching include design, sustainability, regenerative systems and integration of design with complex systems. He is the Co-founder of Sustainable Communities Institute Inc (SCI) where he is also a practicing consultant.

Prof. RICHARD LEVINE affiliate  Professeur SAP+D

Richard Levine, principal architect of CSC Design Studio, is a pioneer of solar energy and sustainability, and professor emeritus at the University of Kentucky. In 2010, Levine was named "Passive Solar Pioneer" by the American Solar Energy Society to honor his achievements in the field of solar design.

Dr. GIULIO VERDINI affiliate  Professeur SAP+D

Giulio Verdini is a Professor at the School of Architecture and Cities of the University of Westminster and Lecturer at BA Designing Cities: Planning and Architecture. He is the Co-director of the Institute of Urbanization Research XJTLU. This research is around urban and rural areas, urban revitalization and community participation.

Dr. REMY SIETCHIPING affiliate  ProfesseurSAP+D

Remy Sietchiping is Head of the UN-HABITAT's regional and metropolitan planning unit. He directs the development of the UN-Habitat strategic agenda, including the national urban policy, urban-rural linkages, metropolitan development, and international guidelines for urban and territorial planning.

 

Prof. Peter Nijkamp affiliate  Professeur SAP+D

Peter Nijkamp est professeur émérite en économie régionale et urbaine et en géographie économique à la VU University d'Amsterdam. Il est actuellement affilié à l'Université Adam Mickiewicz, Poznan (Pologne) et la Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) à Hertogenbosch. Il est membre des comités de rédaction et de conseil de plus de 20 revues scientifiques. Il a reçu le prix scientifique le plus prestigieux aux Pays-Bas, le prix Spinoza. Il a non seulement été impliqué dans la recherche universitaire, mais aussi dans l’élaboration de stratégie concrète dans le processus de prise de décision, de développement régional, de gestion de l’environnement, de gouvernance de la culture, transport et communication, et analyse de données avancée.

Dr. Karima Kourtitaffiliate  Professeur SAP+D

Karima Kourtit is a postdoctoral researcher at KTH, with a double PhD in economics and geography. She takes great interest in regional and urban themes, and her main research interest is in the new emerging urban world, creative industries, urban development, cultural heritage, along with digital and strategic performance management.

Dr.CARLO ALBERINI Researcher teacher SAP+D

Carlo Alberini est architecte et docteur en urbanisme, infrastructure et logistique à la faculté d'ingénierie de l'Université de Gênes. Il a enseigné pendant plusieurs années différents cours: ateliers d'urbanisme, histoire de l'urbanisme, urbanisme et gestion urbaine. Son activité de recherche est consacrée à l’analyse de la qualité de l’espace public et à l’interprétation des phénomènes de transformation urbaine des villes méditerranéennes.

Dr.CARLO ALBERINI affiliate  Professeur SAP+D

Carlo Alberini is an architect and PhD in urban planning, infrastructure and logistics at the Faculty of Engineering of Genoa University. For several years, he has taught different courses and workshops on urban planning, the history of urban planning, and urban management. His research is devoted to analyzing the quality of public space and interpreting the phenomena of urban transformation of Mediterranean cities.
